 Term 4 Connected Learning

This term, our learning focus is on Space. Our key text in English is The Darkest Dark by Chris Hadfield which is a story based on his own life as a young boy dreaming to become and astronaut but is afraid of the dark. During the unit we will focus on using the correct tense, varying verbs and conjunctions, using commas in writing to clear up ambiguity and use of brackets or commas to indicate parenthesis. The children will then write a biography for Chris Hadfield. In Science, we will be learning about reasons Earth has day and night and the different moon phases. We will also complete an educational visit to the Science Museum in London to see the space exhibit and learn more about space exploration. During DT, we will investigate space rovers and learn how to make a simple moving mechanism using elastic bands to then design and make our own space rover prototype. Music also follows the space theme children will use ‘Earth’ by Hans Zimmer which also links to music from the Blue Planet programme. They will reflect on pieces of music and then compose their own. They will look at notation and musical terms. In Geography we will be learning about the northern and southern hemisphere and be able to use longitude and latitude to help explain time zones and climate zones. In RE it will look at the theme of Salvation the big question is ‘What did Jesus do to save human beings?’. Children will explore the word sacrifice and its meaning, suggest meanings for different Bible texts relating to Jesus’ last days and understand why Holy Communion is important to Christians.
