Poverty Proofing Statement at JWS

At The John Wesley CEM Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that no child’s educational experience or access to opportunity is limited by financial disadvantage. We recognise that poverty can affect every aspect of a child's life—from learning and wellbeing to participation and inclusion—and we actively work to remove financial barriers wherever they exist.

Our Commitments:

  • Equity in Access: We ensure all children can participate in school trips, enrichment activities, clubs, and special events, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. Voluntary contributions are handled sensitively, and support is available for families eligible for Free School Meals or facing financial hardship.
  • Uniform and Essentials: We promote affordable uniform options and discreetly support families with uniform, shoes, coats, and school bags if needed. Pre-loved uniform is available year-round.
  • Curriculum Design: Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and mindful of costs. Where resources are needed for home learning, these are provided free of charge.
  • Communication: We use inclusive language in all correspondence, avoiding assumptions about finances or home circumstances. We consult with families and pupils when introducing any initiatives that may involve costs.
  • Dignity and Sensitivity: We treat all families with kindness and discretion, recognising that poverty can be hidden. Our pastoral and safeguarding teams work closely with families to offer early support and remove stigma.
  • Digital Inclusion: We aim to close the digital divide by offering loaned devices or printed learning materials where necessary, ensuring all pupils can access home learning opportunities.
  • Staff Training: All staff receive training and guidance on poverty awareness, so that provision is equitable and no pupil is made to feel different or excluded due to financial constraints.

Our Aim

We want every child at The John Wesley CEM Primary School to thrive, regardless of their background. By poverty-proofing our policies, practices and provision, we ensure that all children are given the same high-quality opportunities to learn, grow and succeed.
