School Council

Who are we?

The School Council is a group of children, from Year 2 - 6, who are elected to represent the views of the children and improve their school.

We have 2 representatives from each class who are chosen at the beginning of each academic year by their classmates.

What do we do?

The councillors meet regularly to discuss projects, ideas and issues that may have been raised by other children within the school. After our meetings, the councillors are responsible for sharing feedback with their classes and carrying out any jobs that have been given to them from the discussion.

What our are aims?

Our school council is one that represents the views of all students and gets things done while demonstrating our school's values and vision.

We strive to have:-

  • Regular meetings
  • A council that is not too big
  • Good communication between representatives and their class
  • Training for school council members
  • Smaller groups (subcommittees) working on specific events or issues
  • A budget (however small)
  • Annual evaluations

In the past, the School Council have been involved in a number of exciting and important projects. These have included projects such as the 'Big Dig' to set up our reflection garden, being part of creating the school's behaviour policy and even being involved in interviewing the Headteacher.

What are we working on this year?

This year, the children have been working on different projects to support our school and wider community.

  • Stronger Starts Scheme - To raise money for OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning), the children worked hard to create posters that could be displayed around our school site to share information on how, where and when to vote for our school in the Tesco Stronger Starts Scheme. You can vote for our school using the blue tokens in the stores around Ashford up until January 11th 2026!
  • Litter picking - The children have dedicated some time in our school council meetings to work together and help keep our school environment clean and safe. The children showed excellent teamwork and demonstrated our school values of service and love as they spotted any items that needed to be popped into our bins in order to keep our school looking wonderful and to look after our environment.
  • Spreading joy in the community - The children came together at in December to create some beautiful Christmas cards for the residents in our local nursing home. Each child made cards with thoughtful messages in which were then delivered to the nursing home by some school councillors and members of the school choir who sang some festive songs for the residents.
  • Kindness Project - After such a successful month of Kindness in February last year, we will be working hard in January to prepare Kindness Month and Kindness Week for 2026. Watch this space!

Previous projects

The Big Dig

On a cold and wet Saturday in November, parent and children volunteers came to the school early to begin work on our new Reflection Garden. We managed to mark out and dig several new planter areas, as well as a brand new hole for a brand new pond. We also managed to clear much of the rubbish and old wood away from the garden area so that we can begin planting in the spring.

The Mayor of Ashford, Jenny Webb, even turned up with a donation of £100 for the garden as well!

Thank you and well done to all our volunteers.

  • Nurture UK - the children have had meetings with Miss Hanks and Mrs Challoner this year to discuss the 6 principles of nurture. Together, they've been thinking about how to embed these principles in our school to make it a happy, safe and nurturing place for all of our children. The children are currently helping to put together a video for the Nurture UK accreditation to show all of the wonderful things our school has to offer.
  • Kindness Project - a big focus for our council across the first part of the year has been launching our kindness project. Across February 2025, we hosted a Kindness Month with a special Kindness Week taking place from Monday 10th February to Friday 14th February. The councillors are now responsible for championing kindness for the rest of the year and continuing to share the importance of being kind!
