Sustainability
Our Commitment to Sustainability
At The John Wesley CEM Primary School, we strive to help our pupils understand the world and recognise that their actions to care for the earth and its inhabitants truly matter. Guided by our Christian values of Koinonia, Love, Forgiveness, Compassion, Wisdom and Service, we foster an ethos that cares deeply about:
- The energy and water we consume
- The waste we produce
- The food we serve
- The traffic we attract
- The challenges faced by people in our local community and across the globe
We value the environment, both natural and human-shaped, as the centre of life and a source of wonder and inspiration. On this foundation, we accept our responsibility to maintain a sustainable environment for future generations.
Why This Matters
Schools play a vital role in shaping the future. The Department for Education (DfE) has made sustainability a priority because climate change and biodiversity loss are among the biggest challenges facing our world. By embedding environmental responsibility into school life, we:
- Prepare pupils with the knowledge and skills they need for a changing world
- Support national commitments to reach net zero by 2050
- Improve wellbeing through connection with nature and greener spaces
- Model positive action for our community and future generations
Our work is not just about reducing impact—it’s about inspiring children to become responsible, informed citizens who care for God’s creation and lead change.
Our Aims
- Ensure every pupil and member of staff can participate in making The John Wesley CEM Primary School an eco-friendly and sustainable community
- Develop children’s awareness, understanding and respect for the environments they live in, securing their commitment to sustainable development at personal, national and global levels
- Enable children to be positive citizens in society
- Empower pupils to learn about and help decide the priorities for our school
