Elm (Year 5)

Welcome to Year 5 – 2023-2024

Ms Berry, Mrs Traves and Miss Spence would like to welcome you all to Elm.

An Outline of Our Learning

In Maths we follow the White Rose curriculum, which involves using concrete and pictorial methods to solve fluency calculations, problem solving and reasoning.

We are also developing the children maths mastery by following a new Maths Mastery programme, whereby the children will develop a solid foundation for conceptual reasoning.

In English, we are following the Pathways to Write Programme and linking other select texts to our Connected Learning. Our key texts this term are: Kensuke Kingdom and then The Hunter. There is a key focus on vocabulary for writing as well as editing and improving our grammar, spelling and punctuation, we look at specific rules and patterns each week and complete regular spelling activities.

In reading, the children will continue to their home reading and guided reading texts. Once they finish reading a book, they need to take an Accelerated Reader quiz. Our aim is an average of 85% and above.

Our Connected Learning big question for Term 6 is...

  • What impact do humans have on Planet Earth?

Please see our home learning challenges in the document below. This homework is due in towards the end of the large term, to be presented to the class.

Seesaw can also be used by us to post: Home learning challenges, termly spelling lists, reading challenges and class information. Your child can then choose whether to bring their work into class or respond via Seesaw.

Log in information can be found in the children's reading records.

Please note for Term 6:

Tuesday = Forest School (change of clothes, wellies and waterproof coats)

Thursday = Commando Josh (PE kits, waterproof coats and wellies)

Children are provided with all log in information in the back of the children's reading records for Seesaw, Accelerated Reader, Purple Mash and Times Tables Rockstars.

Please contact the office (on 01233 614660 or email on office@john-wesley.org.uk ) if you have any questions or would like to arrange a time to talk. The children also have their reading records which you can write notes in to communicate with us.

Kind regards,

Ms Berry (Class Teacher), Mrs Traves (Classroom Assistant), and Miss Spence (1:1 Support Assistant)
